Foundations of Coaching

Client-Centered

Recognizing that the client is the expert in their life, NTA health coaches empower clients to strengthen their belief in themselves and confidence in their ability to make consistent progress toward their unique vision of health and wellness.

Bio-Individuality

NTA health coaches honor client bio-individuality, recognizing there is no one size fits all approach to health coaching. Listening to the client’s experience and honoring client accessibility, NTA health coaches draw from their health coaching skills and tools to meet the client where they are.

Trust

NTA health coaches hold a safe place for clients to continually feel seen, heard, encouraged, trusted and supported. Honoring the courage of the client to ask for support, NTA health coaches seek understanding first through active listening and active observing, offering compassion and empathy, and trusting the client’s experience.

Resilience

NTA health coaches foster client resilience, recognizing client ambivalence and struggles as a normal part of the process while encouraging self-compassion, self-kindness, and a growth mindset in clients.

Ethics

NTA health coaches prioritize coach self-care, supporting their health through nutrition, lifestyle, and mindset. Understanding the roles and responsibility of both coach and client, NTA health coaches adopt a high standard of ethics and set healthy boundaries while supporting clients within scope of practice.

What is Health Coaching?

Health coaching is the creative process that empowers
a client to make lasting behavior changes and regain confidence in their ability to succeed.

An NTA Certified Professional Health and Wellness Coach (PHWC) is equipped to cultivate curiosity, encourage exploration, and reflect objective truths that empower a client to discover possibilities and create a supportive path toward their vision of health and wellness.

Take the current healthcare crisis head-on and lead the charge in providing services that will positively impact the future of healthcare, yourself, your family, and your community!

What Can I Do With my PHWC Certification?

After graduation, it can sometimes feel overwhelming with the possibilities and choices available. Sometimes you might not quite feel ready to start your own practice right away. Here are a few ideas of what a graduate from the NTA could do, (and ARE doing!)

Start Your Private Health Coaching Practice

Work one-on-one with clients, offer group coaching programs, or partner with other professionals in wellness centers and health food stores. Many NTPs also host workshops, build corporate wellness offerings, or serve as reps for nutrition-based companies—all while creating the flexible, purpose-driven business they envisioned.

  • Create group coaching programs

  • Conduct workshops on mindset & behavioral change

  • Create online courses, memberships, and guides

Allied Practitioner Partnerships

Work alongside allied practitioners in your community, like a chiropractor, naturopath, health clinic, hospital, nursing home, veteran

Companies & Education

From nonprofit work to influencing public health policy, NTPs play a valuable role in shifting the wellness conversation. Many graduates advocate for access to whole foods, support sustainable food systems, or consult on school and community initiatives—bringing Nutritional Therapy to the forefront of change.

  • Corporate Wellness: Work as a health coach in corporate settings by hosting workshops, retreats, speaking events, and group or 1:1 coaching.

  • Advocacy Work: Work as a health coach for non-profit organizations or within policy reform and public health.

Some of our students are saying...

"This program is emotionally nutritive!"
"The health and wellness industry can sometimes feel very cut
throat and competitive. To hear you say every week that the
world needs us to show up as health and wellness coaches
the way that only we as an individual can is so incredibly
calming, reassuring and empowering."
"What I realized through this experience, is that although we
have certain goals in this process, this is just a conversation…
a simple conversation where we’re just getting to know
someone. It should be easy, relaxed, and human. And by
human, I mean imperfect. It’s ok to not go in the perfect order
or say the most ideal thing at just the right moment. What IS
most important is to be fully present, desirous of being there
with this person, curious as all heck, and listening mindfully.
If you’re doing that, and don’t let overwhelm or fear creep in,
it somehow just flows. Plus, it’s actually quite enjoyable!"
"I am enjoying the curriculum tremendously and already
have experienced an amplified richness in my personal
life and professional practice. Tuesday nights are the
highlight of my week!"
"Your content is so well organized and clearly surpasses the
three programs I had to piece together to feel qualified to sit
for the NBHWC exam. Congrats to you and your team - I
know a lot of hard work has gone into this."
"I am enjoying this course so much! So many eye-opening
things that really have me so excited to pass along to current
clients and also to future clients! Your attention to helping all
of us succeed and send out ripples to those around us is felt
so deeply! I greatly appreciate you!"
"My managers are inviting me to higher level meetings
because I’m a clearer communicator."

Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.

Does the PWHC program prepare you to sit for board exams?

The Nutritional Therapy Association’s Professional Health and Wellness Coaching (PHWC) Program is an Approved Health and Wellness Coach Training & Education Program by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).

Graduates of this program meet the education requirements to sit for the HWC Certifying Examination to become National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). Completion of 50 health coaching sessions and documentation of an Associate’s degree or 4,000 hours of work experience is also required to sit for the exam.

How is the PHWC program different from the NTP program?

The NTP Program focuses largely on the Foundations of Health, with an emphasis on understanding how to determine what food, lifestyle, and supplement recommendations can support a client’s bio-individual needs and health goals. The PHWC program, on the other hand, is largely focused on skills and techniques that help clients achieve sustainable, lasting behavior change.

Where an NTP/FNTP seeks to fulfill the role of a health and nutrition expert for clients, a PHWC seeks to offer support, encouragement, and reflection that will empower a client to truly own the direction and outcomes of their wellness journey. Both pieces of the puzzle can be incredibly important for clients to experience the transformed health they desire.

Are there prerequisites for the PHWC program?

Students participating in the PWHC program must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and must be at least 18 years of age. Minors may enquire for an exemption to take the program, but will not receive their certification until they turn 18.

What sets the PHWC program apart from other programs in the market?

Our NBHWC Approved Training Program provides 8 months of in-depth education and interactive training.

We emphasize:
- A client-led approach
- Active listening and emotional awareness
- Unconditional positive regard

Graduates will be fully equipped and confident to partner with clients seeking to improve their health and wellness through behavior change. Using their coaching skillset, PHWCs support and empower clients to discover possibilities and create a supportive path toward their vision of health and wellness.

What if I can't attend the live lecture calls?

To earn the PHWC credential, a student may only miss a maximum of 3 live lectures during the program; if you do miss a lecture, you must watch the recording and complete a make-up assignment to earn credit. If more than 3 live lectures are missed, or, if a make-up assignment is not completed, a student will not graduate from the program.

Can I take this course while working a full time job?

Yes, it is possible to be successful in the PWHC program while working or balancing family responsibilities. We recommend devoting 8-10 hours per week to review the content, attend the weekly class call or coaching mentor session, complete the required reading, work on assignments, and study.

Aside from the weekly live class call and five Coaching Mentor sessions, which are scheduled on specific days/times, you can weave all other course activities into your schedule before or after work, on weekends, or whenever your week allows.
